OPTIMA

IPCRI is participating in the OPTIMA (OPTImisation for Sustainable Water MAnagement) that brings together 14 partners from 12 different Mediterranean countries. IPCRI’s part in the project is concerned with the socio-economic management of the Mountain Aquifer. The project is supported by the European Union.

OPTIMA seeks to improve efficiency in the use and allocation of water in the Mediterranean region, especially in the coastal zone of the South and East, in order to ensure sustainable development where economies are developing, and land use and demography change.

Specific emphasis will be put on local acceptance and implementation through the inclusion of stake-holders in an interactive, participatory decision making process. The formal approach provides a rational basis for policy and decision making, empowerment and legitimacy through information.

The project includes the following components.

Development of integrated Decision Support Systems

Test of the Decision Support Systems in the case studies

Definition of strategies to increase efficiency and to reconciliate conflicting demands, considering demographic development, migration, and economic and technical development
