Gaza is in the midst of an energy crisis. According to the Gaza Energy Authority, the strip needs 350 MW of electricity to meet current demand and yet has the capacity to supply only 262 MW. Gaza experiences daily blackouts as a result of this deficit (averaging 12 hours per day in March 2012), putting huge strain on the local economy and the wellbeing of the Gazan people.

A stable supply of electricity is critical to all key functions of the Gazan society (healthcare, water supply, sewage pumping and treatment, education, and wellbeing), and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has recently deemed this deteriorating energy supply a critical human rights issue. It is clear that Gaza is in need of long-term, reliable energy solutions.

In response, IPCRI, along with local Gazan partners, is conducting a feasibility study to determine the degree of potential for rooftop photovoltaic solar panel implementation on public buildings throughout the Gaza Strip.

Outcomes of the study will enable the development of effective renewable energy installations that will provide much-needed clean and abundant energy to the Gazan energy grid. The long-term goal is to assist Gaza in developing a robust renewable energy sector, reducing its energy deficit, and enabling sustainable, just growth.

IPCRI is starting the feasibility study in the beginning of 2013, as soon as the study is finished it's findings will be published on our website.
